The University of Kansas, also known as simply KU, traces its history back in 1863, when Governor Thomas Carney signed into a law bill, in order to create the university in Lawrence City. The University of Kansas was officially organized in 1864, and in September 1865, the construction of the university started, with the help of the Lawrence citizens. KU opened its doors to students for the first time in 1866, on the 12th of September, the first graduating class being registered in 1873.
Today, the University of Kansas is known as being a renowned research university, with the main campus located in Lawrence, KS, having a total enrollment estimated at nearly 30 000 students, being a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities.
The KU athletic teams are known as the Kansas Jayhawks, who participate in the Big 12 Conference and NCAA's Division I. They've won a total of 12 National Championships in various sports areas, including basketball, indoor track and cross country.
